Answer: Metastatic malignant melanoma
Histology: Sections show a core biopsy of dense fibrous tissue with chronic inflammation and clusters of loosely cohesive tumor cells that have plasmacytoid features. A focus of necrotic tumor cells is also noted at one end of the core.
Discussion: Immunostains performed in our laboratory demonstrated that the tumor cells are S-100, Melan-A and MITF positive and HMB45, AE1/AE3, Cam5.2, CK7, CK20, p63 and PAX-8 negative. This staining pattern supports the diagnosis of metastatic melanoma.
