Discussion: Sections show respiratory mucosa with variable amount of subepithelial chronic inflammation and fibrosis and excess mucin production. These features in view of the clinical findings are consistent with the wall of a mucocele.
Mucocele of the maxillary sinus is considered a complication of chronic sinusitis where the accumulation of the inflammatory exudates and mucin lift off the epithelial lining of the sinus. The process results in slow destruction of the underlying bone and may result in a cystic/cavitary lesion sometimes mistaken for a neoplasm.
