Answer: Focal nodular hyperplasia
Histology: This is a focal lesion in an otherwise unremarkable liver. The lesion features bridging bands of fibrosis separating nodules of regenerating hepatocytes. Dilated vessels are present within the central scar of the lesion. These are the typical features of focal nodular hyperplasia: aka, focal cirrhosis.
Discussion: Cirrhosis should be a diffuse process involving the entire liver, not a focal lesion. Nodular regenerative hyperplasia is also a diffuse process which lacks the fibrosis of the current case. Hepatic adenoma would not have the fibrosis bands and bile duct proliferation associated with this lesion.
