Question 1 of 1
1. Question
Week 106: Case 1
This is a 56 year old female with a cystic pancreatic mass./images/Lyn’s/9-2-02-Hruban-1.a.jpg
Correct
Answer: Serous cystadenoma
Histology: This gross photo reveals a large well-defined cystic mass. The cysts are relatively small (1-2 mm) and the mass has a central stellate scar.
Discussion: This gross appearance is virtually diagnostic of a serous cystadenoma. Serous cystadenomas are well-demarcated cystic neoplasms. The cysts tend to be small (1-2 mm), but can be larger. As nicely illustrated in this case there is often a central stellate scar. Microscopically, as has been discussed before, the cells lining the cysts in serous cystadenomas are uniform cubiodal cells with clear cytoplasm and central uniform nuclei.
