Answer: Synthetic beads
Histology: Numerous uniform amorphous spherical bodies are found primarily in the vasculature.
Discussion: While we usually think of an infectious agent when we identify uniform round structures in tissues, we should also think of synthetic material. In this case the patient had been treated with intravascular radioactive beads (spherules). Some of these beads remain within the vasculature. With the recent advances in nanotechnology we can expect to encounter greater numbers of cases with administered synthetic material.
