I found the information here very helpful. I am a RN and even for me, the diagnosis of a mass on your pancrease is scary. Having information like this available helps me to understand what a Whipple is and what to expect.

This is a good question. While the presence or absence of lymph node metastases is very important, there is a growing body of literature suggesting that the "lymph node ratio" (the ratio of positive over negative lymph nodes) is also important. See:
The emerging issue of ratio of metastatic to resected lymph nodes in gastrointestinal cancers: An overview of literature.

Does the number of lymph nodes involved affect survival rates? I know someone who had a Whipple, total tumor was removed with no positive margins, and involvement of 1 of the 26 local nodes. Would that lead to a higher survival rate than for someone who had involvement of multiple nodes?

My husband had andeocarcinoma of the head of the pancreas. He had to have a biliary drain placed through the liver and a bypass from his stomach to his small intestine due to the tumor blocking the duodenum. He developed a blood clot in his leg and he was given Fragmin to prevent clots and contain the clot that existed. A week later he died from massive bleeding into his stomach. ( he was vomiting pure blood in large quantities). They told us there was nothing they could do because of his weakened state. Is this complication common and was there really nothing they could do? Thank you for your reply.
